How to be a seahorse-friendly photographer

DOs

  • Keep your distance: Stay at least 30cm (1 foot) away from seahorses to avoid causing stress.
  • Be mindful: If a seahorse shows signs of stress such as erratic movements, swimming away, rapid gill movement, give it space and back off.
  • Limit your time: Avoid gathering of more than 4 divers or snorkelers. Keep your interactions short.
  • Limit lighting: Strong underwater lights can disturb seahorses. Use minimally and turn them off when you notice signs of stress.

DON'Ts

  • No touching: Avoid all physical contact with seahorses and their habitat.
  • No sticks or tools: Never use a diving stick, or other tools to touch or move them.
